The story of Nathaniel McHorney's 1901 trip to Ecuador.

January 25th, 1901

The page for Friday, January 25th says:

Leave Boya's about 5:30 a.m.
Arrive Concepcion 11 Am.
Enquire for eggs - if we remain over
night - they will send into the Pueblo
Schoeneman's agent full of tricks to have
us remain. We go ahead arrive at
Playa de Oro 2:30 p.m. Now, for as
wild a ride in a canoe as ever I
want. Get to thinking "How can the Co.
ever repay D.C.S for his nerve and
service to it" Talk of rain; it is
not the word to use- cloudbursts,
continuous and unremitting downpour
for 2 hours. Canoe flooded - trees
smapping - men poling for the lives
and boy calm and blue eyed at the
novelty of it. Well, my head is some-
what relieved for the fear of an upset
or a sinking of canoe. Arrive at
Playa Rica at 4:30 p,pm. Making the
best record time for an up trip.
Report to Mr. D.C. Stapleton, V.P. and
assigned to a house for the night.
C.G.F and family arrive 1/2 hours later.
Well it has been a day for
us. Soaking wet. Climb up a
bank 40 feet high to tierrar.
Dream of Anna xxx Teresa S.A.C (very faint)

Questions and comments:

  • Playa Rica is just upriver from Playa De Oro
  • The last line is very faint.
  • On Jan 20th, he wrote “Dreaming of Sr. Teresa de Sales, and Anna” – is this the same?
