The story of Nathaniel McHorney's 1901 trip to Ecuador.

February 3rd, 1901

The page for Sunday, February 3rd says:

Awakened at 5:40 A.M. Another beautiful
day. The drumming of last night's Fiesta re-
minded one of a show at a County Fair.
Truly enough, we are not far from the early
stages of civilization. With Cayapas indians
who will not work; but, eat fish and dog
meat (a great delicacy) build canoes and
do have high moral principles.
Dreamed of Sarah and Anna last night.
Went to office no one there - came home.
Many thoughts of friends and J.C.
Started a letter to Sisters of Charity.
Clean-up at Boqueron in the morning.
Leave at 5 A.M. D.C.S. & C.G.F to go over.
I asked to go. Later on why not wait and
see Guascamambi - all right come along.
You can stay there all morning and come
away. It will take nearly all day. I back
down - don't want to force myself on the
Vice Pres. Say on a/c of sore heel I will
defer my trip. However I pray for good
results. Probably am touchy.
Rain again today. Had a good day
at meditation on Eternity. Read many
prayers. Remembered all in them.
7:30 P.M. to bed.

Questions and comments:

  • He dreamed of both his dead wife and his future wife?
  • Guascamambi – Is that another mine?

  1. Thanks for sharing! I love to read old diaries. I’m amazed that Americans lived and worked in Ecuador more than 100 years ago.
