The story of Nathaniel McHorney's 1901 trip to Ecuador.

February 15th, 1901

The page for Friday, February 15th says:

Arose at 6 am. At work 6:40 A.M.
Trying hard at books. Told Mr. Stapleton
that I was not a book-keeper.
Willing to do anything else. Don't
like books anyway. Mr. C.G. Franklyn
to give me a hand this afternoon.
Mr. Stapleton tells me not to worry over
it. Mr. Franklyn and I at the
August a/c 4 1/2 hours. He is stumped
but proves up at last. Mr. Franklyn
says its cooking and it is not so in
the other case. The other fellow did
not do it right: Mr. Stapleton in the
Mountains. Sapago Grande - I think.
The day is a beautiful one.
C.G.F is a good demonstrator on books.
Gold and Silver accounts is no easy
task to plough through. Persevere old man
and you will win out yet.
Mrs. Franklyn asked Mr. Stapleton
How would you like to boss a job at
Angostura - He replied - No - he wanted
rest. Later on would he come back to
S.A. He might come down for 2 or 3
months at a time.

Questions and comments:

  • Angostura is a small town in the Colombian Andes where there is also gold mining. I estimate that is about 250 miles north east. On the other hand, I found references to “the Esmerelda and Angostura placer mines” which could imply someplace closer.
  • If Nathaniel is “not a bookkeeper”, what was he hired to do? I’m sure we’ll find out.
