The story of Nathaniel McHorney's 1901 trip to Ecuador.

February 18th, 1901

The page for Monday, February 18th says:

Mail due to pass Esmeraldas
going south today.

Arose at 6:30 A.M. At work 7 A.M.
Work until 11 A.M. Mr. Franklyn
says he wants that Commissary a/c
fixed up before he goes. He admits
the a/cs are intricate - but supposedly
right - studies them for half hour.
Mr. Stapleton charged the various
items for Aug-Sep-Oct-Nov-Dec to
their proper a/cs. Off to Quasamambi,
Angostura Canal, to get work done
before laborers soon leave for Easter
festivities in the interior. Certainly
a bother - leaves early and a bun
for his meal. Boy goes shooting - I ask
what did you get - "A hungry stomach" !!
Only month now out is October 1900.
Earthquake shocks - 2 of them at 5:30 P.M.
Only 100 miles direct line from Chimborazo
Cotopaxi or Cotacachi always in
eruption. In 1868 - 25000 lost their lives.
Quarantine now in effect at Concepcion.
Will begin another Novena.
Thermometer 90° at 11 A.M.
All a/c proved - i.e, 5 months Aug to Dec
Silver tax rolls.

Questions and comments:

  • Chimborazo is the highest mountain in Ecuador (20,565 feet) and is an inactive volcano.
  • Cotopaxi is one of the highest (19,347 feet) active volcanos in the world. Since 1738, the Cotopaxi has erupted more than 50 times.
  • Cotacachi is a dormant volcano in Ecuador (16,200) feet.
  • The quarantine probably is because of the reports of Smallpox (mentioned on Feb 16th) at La Toya.
