The story of Nathaniel McHorney's 1901 trip to Ecuador.

March 9th, 1901

The page for Saturday, March 9th says:

At office 5:55 A.M. Left 9:50 p.m.
Another "Stapleton" day for work.
Mr. Stapleton and Mr. Moore off
to Sapayo Canal 7 A.M. Return at
5:45 p.m.
Mr. Moore says Mr. Stapleton a d-
for doing such a work on construction.
He never would; he thinks
ut a magnificent piece of work.,
Wonders at Mr. Stapleton's energy.
Paying out features. A/cs all
OK for another Sunday.
Work - Work - ! !
Must write Uncle Dudley Ward
a letter full of details - though
he hates long letters.
Devotions tonight in commemoration
of usual weekly confession.
Mail leaves to-morrow.
Much talk over matters.
I fully agree with Mr. D.C. Stapleton
in all matters.

Questions and comments:

  • The last word on the sixth line “d–” is obscured by a dimple in the paper.
  • I don’t know of any relative to Nathaniel named “Dudley Ward”.
  • Nathaniel is quite impressed with Mr. Stapleton.
