The story of Nathaniel McHorney's 1901 trip to Ecuador.

March 10th, 1901

The page for Sunday, March 10th says:

At office 5:50 A.M. Hard at it until
11 A.M. Paid out 200 fichas
Much explaining about time for Feb.
Got through it all ok.
Mr. Stapleton learns of non-payment of his
indian labor - cries at breakfast.
Mr. Moore reads his first letter to me which
goes to N.Y. - by morning mail. I show him
mine to Mr. E.W. Ward. He will call on him
at 13 Liberty St. Going to remain here a month
and work Guasamambi Mine - thinks well
of Mr. Stapleton as a miner. Talked to him
wrongly about mines. D.C.S. polite but firm
in his correct views.
Had to wait until night for my Sunday
devotions.
Thinking of the many glories at hand in
the States for worship.
Slept very poor last night. Got up at
2 A.M. and bathed.
Tired and worn. Work a little too much
for one man at the office. Not kicking.
Wrote Ethel, Maria, SJ, Shah Robinson.
At night again conferring with Mr. D.C.
Stapleton.
Rain.
Good night to my Anna. Communing.

Questions and comments:

  • Mr. E. W. Ward was clearly someone important in Playa De Oro circles, but I haven’t found any records of him.
  • I don’t know who “Ethel” was.
  • I think that “Shah Robinson” is what he wrote.
