The story of Nathaniel McHorney's 1901 trip to Ecuador.

March 16th, 1901

The page for Saturday, March 16th says:

At office 5:45 A.M. At work until
6:45 p.m. paying out the usual
Saturday night pay. Time sheets for
the week not in. Some little trouble to
keep all hands good natured.
Mr. Moore went over to Quasamambi.
Thinks well of Mr. Stapleton's mining -
quick to see points and is a good miner.
Had words with St. Clair Moore concerning
orders to be delivered at office window.
Told his father of the circumstance.
Mr. Stapleton not feeling well to-day.
I told Mr. Moore I thought the action of
N.Y Board broke his heart !!
Prayers to-night.
Boy much consolation to me.
I think St. Clair will make trouble for his
father over this incident to-day.
Well, I did it in interest of Mr. Stapleton
Rather sorry I got so hot.
St. Clair Moore received order from boy who
brought bread up from P. de O. Just an
incident to cause disturbance. One head
only to be successful in anything.

Questions and comments:

  • That must have been quite a shouting match!
  • “One head only” – I don’t understand the phrase; maybe I’m reading it wrong.
