Learn of death of Mr. Stapleton's friend at P. de. O.
Bitten by a snake only lived a few hours.
X snake. Suggest to Mr. Moore the propriety
of closing and going there - for the Company's
good. After breakfast says he - then he has no
boots. At 12 Noon - Mr. Stapleton sends me
word to go and present his regrets, etc.
I do so - Family much gratified. Go down
in 1 hr 15 Minutes. return in 1 hour and half.
Manuel my guide quite knocked out.
Mr. Moore says next clean up will be
$1000 - and that he will make $5000 for Mr.
Stapleton to pay his laborers. Also,
Mr. Stapleton will will pay him his a/c too.
Probably Mr. Stapleton might send him to
England. Mr Moore read his report to

will (underlined) pay, and 8c earth too.
Money will have to be forthcoming
say $25000. Will bring his family
down. Practically all morning with him.
Brought me over to Managers house to read
aloud his report. Very sanguine as to

Questions and comments:

  • Mr. Moore’s report (to the N.Y board?) appears to be positive; a big change from when he arrived.
