The story of Nathaniel McHorney's 1901 trip to Ecuador.

April 1st, 1901

The page for Monday, April 1st says:

At office 5:20 A.M. until 8 p.m.
Fixing up pay for 14 Indians - $800 due them.
Only have on hand $30 Cash. Give them due
bills for their balances. Mr. Stapleton handles them
well. He returns to Quasamambi Mine at night.
Mr. Moore says he wants an easier job than
this one, and he can get it. Sorry he left good
people - these 2 claims will pay. If Franklyn
river is brought to the North side mines, the
stockholders will get par for their shares.
He means that too. No other way can it be
done. Leave the water to run the other digging
that is the way big money was made in
California - i.e, water at 25 cents an
inch. Stapleton knows a lot more mining
than any of these people who were here.
Quick to lean. McNulty's idea of opening
Sajado Mine would have ruined it.
Gerald Stapleton expected to-morrow.
Boy returns from Quasamambi. Knows
how to pipe cave and follow.
A very very busy day for me.
Glad to go to bed.
Wondering if Anna is worrying.
Not much rain to-day.
Mail expected to-morrow.
John More, dynamiter not around today.
