The story of Nathaniel McHorney's 1901 trip to Ecuador.

April 7th, 1901

The page for Sunday, April 7th says:

Easter Sunday at office 5:50 A.M.
Boy presents me with 5 cigars for Easter.
Kept from Smoking during Lent.
No one at Playa Rica. All hands down
to Playa de Oro to the dance. Mr. D.C.
Stapleton learns of a cave at No 3 tunnel.
Goes up there. Back to supper.
Pretty well disgusted with it all.
Wrote short letters to Annie, Susie,
Maria and Adelaide - Also letters for
Jim Gormley, Clark T. Gremins to go by this
mail, likewise one to Sister Lydia.
Boy wrote Wm. Heavey and Drew Daly.
Did not mail any letters to Anna and
Adelaide Lauterbach - too blue. Nor to
Maria, Susie. Simply addressed
a brief note to Susie saying we were
well. Also, stating Mr. A.L. Moore would
call upon her.

Questions and comments:

  • First mention of Clark ?Gremins? – is that the correct transcription ?
  • “Anna and Adelaide Lauterbach”; Sister Lydia – these are Nathaniel’s future wife and in-laws.
