The story of Nathaniel McHorney's 1901 trip to Ecuador.

April 9th, 1901

The page for Tuesday, April 9th says:

At office 6 A.M.
Very dreary here to-day. Blue day.
John Moore, dynamiter, calls for his a/c.
Mr. D.C. Stapleton informs him in plain
language that he is Governor of this
property. Pays him in full with check.
Gives him 24 hours to leave the property.
And, if he again puts foot upon
this place he will shoot him. Ought
to send him to Esmeraldas in irons.
Moore very saucy. D.C. Stapleton jumps
from his desk. Expect a shooting affair.
More goes down stairs bids his friends
good-bye. I see him going away.
Tough country - tough people - and the
whole proposition an enigma to me.
Much thought of Anna; and civilized
people.
Rain again - Two good days for mining
and a cave on hand. Well, well.
Boy very happy. Expects to beat
me at pinochle. Does it too.
Must pray for resignation.

Questions and comments:

  • I don’t know what Mr. Moore did to earn Mr. Stapleton’s enmity. Mr. Moore’s wife died less than a week ago.
