The story of Nathaniel McHorney's 1901 trip to Ecuador.

April 10th, 1901

The page for Wednesday, April 10th says:

At office 6 A.M. Beautiful sunrise.
Fixed up the balances for the laborers a/cs.
Read Anna's and sisters letters from
home - much consolation from them.
Boy helping me in the office.
Men slowly going up to repair the cave
in Tunnel No 3.
Mr. Stapleton a queer dick - I guess it is
because of his suffering from biliousness.
Much talk about the P. de O. affairs.
Manuel Echeverria, cook, his brother and
cousin and another leave her June 15 for
the interior.
Boy shot a nice bird to secure the wings.
Food getting scarce.
Thing of the watchman carrying a lantern and
Junior having to show him how to load his
revolver. 5 chamber and only 1 bullet in it
at that. It was 2 chambers away from the
hammer.
We have a 9 ft. snake skin - saw it taken
from the snake. Will give it to St. Patrick's Club.
Snake was not entirely dead : Men that took
off the skin are sure to bury its fangs because
if one should step upon them - they poison just
the same. Men had it lassoed when they
brought it to me for sale.
