The story of Nathaniel McHorney's 1901 trip to Ecuador.

April 15th, 1901

The page for Monday, April 15th says:

At office 6.05 A.M.
Feeling good to-day. Dreaming of Anna
last night. She said: "Rest easy, dear heart"
and I am.
Mr. Meisner who has been here 13
months says the place looks deserted.
Boy helps me check up pay rolls.
Nothing of importance doing.
Very little water at Bulkhead so
the Watchman informs me. 1 Monitor
running. Thos P. Francis calls to me
that 3 Indians are escaping !! They
are leaving here in disgust. Company
owes them money. Very good men too.
Jose Cayetano Orbe, Vicente Orbe and
Jose Manuel Tugumbango. Think of it.
Learn that 1800 men are employed
cutting mule trail from Quito to Con-
cepcion. 2 years work ahead and
pay days sure.
Thank God for an easy mind.
Read all my letters to-day.
Have had great comfort from prayer.

Questions and comments:

  • “Escaping” is a strange choice of word.
