The story of Nathaniel McHorney's 1901 trip to Ecuador.

April 16th, 1901

The page for Tuesday, April 16th says:

At office 5:50 A.M.
Not much doing. Get all this months work
posted to date. Observe that the native women
handle an ax well. Think of it. In bare feet.
Begin counting bread to-day. Watching
the cook - necessary now. Think of using
salt from the brine of pork for the table.
Our store-keeper boils the brine and saves
salt in that manner.
Canoes coming up. One arrived at 7 p.m.
Whew! what an ugly face on one of those
peons. Was glad to leave the office at
once after paying them. Confess I fear
him.
Boy in good spirits all day.
Gave Mr. E.J. Meisner a letter to Susie.
House in good shape.
Hear of a slide of earth from pipe
near Quasamambi. Pipe intact.
