The story of Nathaniel McHorney's 1901 trip to Ecuador.

April 17th, 1901

The page for Wednesday, April 17th says:

At office 5:50 A.M.
Desultory day. Canoe arrived with
Rice and Beans.
The principal medicine for all sickness
in these parts is Castor Oil. The remedy
for all sores, cuts, etc, is Mercurial
ointment.
Boy says for me to put down "That he is
going to beat me at pinochle".
Manuel Ruiz left to-day for the
trail-cutting job. Company owes him
money!
Another day nearer my gaoul.
Time hands heavy - Interest beginning
to lade.
Mr Meisner told me of the Utica
Mine of California. Its run of
hard black, firstly.

Questions and comments:

  • Rice and beans will be a nice change.
  • The Utica Mine was in Calaveras county, California.
  • He really wrote “gaoul” – I think he meant “goal”
  • “Interest beginning to fade”, maybe – but that first letter is not an ‘f’.
