The story of Nathaniel McHorney's 1901 trip to Ecuador.

April 22nd, 1901

The page for Monday, April 22nd says:

At office 6:50 A.M.
Get my pay rolls in good shape.
John Moore, dynamiter, returns here.
Says our drafts will not be taken for
10c at La Tola. One man had $90 draft
returned to him from the Bank.
He came to see Mr. Stapleton about
his two drafts - $40 and $42. Handed
them to me. I told him to keep them.
Strange enough I saw Henry Lanado
on Saturday lsat skulking around
the little copse of woods near Mr. D.C.S
house - just about where the watchman
shot at last week. Is there and connection
with his return.

Receive mail from Harry, Susie, and
Mr. Geo W. Holt to-day with papers too.
Have been reading for 2 hours.
Nothing from N.Y. Office in this mail.
Boy is happy.
Francis and I do a little patching
on roadways.
Men will quit if Mr. Stapleton washes
down much more earth. They want to
see him go down for the money to pay off.
Probably will desert then too.

Questions and comments:

  • Nathaniel does not sound optimistic about the future of the mine.
  • Harry and Susie are his brother and sister.
  • I don’t know who George Holt is.
