The story of Nathaniel McHorney's 1901 trip to Ecuador.

May 2nd, 1901

The page for Thursday, May 2nd says:

At office 6:15 A.M.
Work, work, constantly 10 hours - no joke.
Change to me wonderful indeed.
Pay rolls and time sheets until I am
tired. No place to go for a walk.
Truly a retired place. Gerald likes it.
Talk much with him about California.
Boy goes over to Quasamambi Mine on
errand.
Nugent still panning quicksilver over
and over again.
Rain, Rain, am getting disgusted.
Patience, my boy, patience.
No mail.
Same old dish salt pork, beans and rice.
Pray is the sauce for consolation.

Questions and comments:

  • “Truly a retired place” – I don’t know what that means.
