The story of Nathaniel McHorney's 1901 trip to Ecuador.

May 8th, 1901

The page for Wednesday, May 8th says:

At office 6 A.M.
February Pay Roll $2156.60
March " " 2309.40
April " " 1915.65
Pretty fair work for a man to jump
right in and handle without experience.
Wages 40¢ 60¢ 70¢ 80¢ 1.00 1.20 1.40 1.50 1.75 2.00
up to as high as $3 per day.
Received a letter from Jim Gormley of Mar
28 - papers from Harry and Susie.
Learn that 4 canoes of provisions are at
Playa de Oro. River too high for the
past 14 days. Good thing for we are
just out out everything except rice.
Gerald out of patience with improper
transportation facilities.
Feel great joy in hearing from Jim.

Questions and comments:

  • Jim Gormley is a frequent correspondent – but I don’t know who he was. A friend?
  • Letter mailed (from New Jersey, I assume) on March 28th arrived on May 8th. That’s a transit time of 41 days.
