The story of Nathaniel McHorney's 1901 trip to Ecuador.

May 9th, 1901

The page for Thursday, May 9th says:

At office 6 A.M.
Read my papers. Journal's editorial on Christ-
ianity good. Got Ethel's Easter Card in
newspapers.
Gerald over to Quasamambi and then over to
Sajado Canal. No canoes up yet! No food
in hand. Francis says we are in for 1 weeks
starvation. Helped unload a burro - my first.
Raining fast since 4:30 p.m. - river rises.
Work on pay roll for April.
Not much of a day for work.
Read my J.C. papers too.
N.Y. Herald's interesting of days of March
17 and 24th.
Boy asks if it is expected of him to
make Anna a wedding present.
I tell him to get there first. He says
Oh! That is all right - you will
get there. Cheery boy and happy
for me to have such a companion.
Salt even melts in this country.
River been normal most of the day.
Good night to my Anna.

Questions and comments:

  • Nathaniel has written to Ethel before – and he has mentioned his niece Ethel Daly – but I don’t know if they are the same people.
  • Confirmation that Nathaniel and Anna’s wedding was arranged before he went to Ecuador – before she went to Dulzura. (He could have proposed to her by letter, I suppose – but he never mentioned that in his diary)
