The story of Nathaniel McHorney's 1901 trip to Ecuador.

May 11th, 1901

The page for Saturday May 11th says:

At office 6 A.M. Eventful day of it.
Gerald gets off with 3 pilots for cargoe canoes.
Reaches Playa de Oro and returns with Mr. Matson.
Mr. Matson's line is hydraulics. Canoe empty.
Gerald says that he lost his trunk in an upset.
6 p.m. canoe arrives with Beef and Pork.
Much excitement and buying. Mr Downey down
from his camp. Says he has been ready since
Tuesday last at breakfast time. Mr. Nugent
had a sore foot and was not out for 3 days.
Will have to handle the rackarock. Nugent does
not know.
Gerald and canoe pilot have an argument
about being paid. They are angry because
other men have gone down for our provisions.
Expect to have trouble with them after
they are paid off.
River very high to-day. It went down
quickly too. Had a walk down Jackson Ave
with Addie in dreamland - Jim was
studying at law. We go after him.
Sent a letter to Jim to-day.
Town all but deserted from 11 A.M. until
3 p.m. fearfully lonesome too.
Said my stations and Rosary.
