The story of Nathaniel McHorney's 1901 trip to Ecuador.

May 16th, 1901

The page for Thursday May 16th says:

At office 6 A.M.
Nattie's birthday - 16 years of age.
Make him a present. Delighted.
4 canoes arrive. System all awry.
Gerald running things.
Tell's the canoe-men of Borbon just
what he thinks - flashes a $50 bill.
They are children - laugh and try to
be serious.
Very busy keeping things straight.
Boy off for a camp.

Enjoyed himself thoroughly.
A most gloriously beautiful sunset.
Prayers and thankful for the day being past.

Questions and comments:

  • Nathaniel wrote “agog”, crossed it out, and substituted “awry”.
  • What happened to D.C. Stapleton arriving (and Nathaniel leaving)?
  • “Thankful for the day being past” sounds like something monumental has occurred, but what?
