The story of Nathaniel McHorney's 1901 trip to Ecuador.

August 27th, 1901

The page for Tuesday, August 27th says:

Buenaventura - Troop S.S. Manavi
S.S. Memphis - German Line arrives
in port.
Get a good wash.
Soldiers coming aboard - gambling with
dice immediately. A motley gathering.
Dress as variegated as at a masquerade.
Sun screen partitions us from soldiers.
Did think Captain might favor
the Anglo-Saxon. Don't talk of an
alliance with Great Britain to me.
3 Americans and an English S.S. ??
Jamaicans, Swiss, French, Italian and
even a heathen Chinaman aboard
trying to buy Potatoes. My Irish friend
Downey saying nothing.
Saw soldier wearing Sacred Heart on his shirt.
Soldiers wear two hats. Sergents Eton jackets.
Arms stowed. One sick man. Called Steward's,
Doctor and 2d Officer's attention to put him
ashore, if his disease was contagious.
Women wearing blue ribbons around their hats
indicated they fight with the regiment and are
good fighters too. Though men and women
holler at the high waves and run
away from sides of ship when they come near
afraid as if they were children. Soldiers.

Questions and comments:

  • Nathaniel seems more worried about disease than anything else.
  • An Eton jacket is a waist-length jacket with a V-shaped back, open in the front.
