The story of Nathaniel McHorney's 1901 trip to Ecuador.

August 29th, 1901

The page for Thursday, August 29th says:

S.S. Manavi - last night quiet. Watched
until 11:30 p.m. to keep away from us dirty
soldiers. Mr. Benson, Chief Steward, talks.
Bilge water 12 inches midship 6 inches bow
so I am told by tester. Purser sick.
A nasty man even if good looking.
Off Colombian at 4:30 A.M. Sunrise
very pretty. 6 A.M. soldiers at coffee.
Mostly all use limes as a face wash.
My, my civilization is worth something.
At night the deck looked ghastly, as all
hands lay around the deck sleeping.
Saw soldier trying to light cigar from a
hot steam tube on the winch. Strange indeed.
Panama - 11 oclock A.M.
1st Officer hustles us on the Morro.
Reach Marine Hotel.
See Mr. Diez. Can fix up, Downey. Not
enough money for my passage with Jr.
Will see about it however. Pooh!
Tell him plainly that I depend on him
to r4each New York. He is going on
same steamer and can fix it in N.Y.

Questions and comments:

  • Family stories notwithstanding, it’s clear at this point that Nathaniel is _not_ going to San Diego, but to New York.
